Cowboy poem of lost horse

My horse went down today, the old grays ears were up, he saw the trail, the footing was steep and bad but he gave it his all, my horse went down with me today
My horse went down today, his body not what it used to be, his legs are now laid with bone below the knee, my horse is not as young as he used to be, he went down with me today
His will is strong, his eyes still raring to go, if only old man time, I could lasso and slow. But will is not enough, time I can not stop, my good horse went down with me today.
We both got up and shook it off, I forgot his mistake and he forgave me mine, we both know it’s only a matter of time.
I love the big gray and he tolerates me, we grow old together and enjoy each other, we will ride forever and dream together, but the gray went down with me today
We are not as strong as we used to be, can’t do the things we used to do, trails we mastered, calves branded and steers we turned but we both grew old and went down together today.
